Internship Blog post
First Impressions from Day One - Due Wednesday, May 16
What strikes me most about the workplace is how there is barely anyone in the office so I am able to listen to my music and have time to think to myself. My colleagues are much older than me but they still are friendly to me. So when I don’t understand something in the office they teach me everything they know. What strikes me most about the job that I am doing is I get to do hands on work. Being able to help go through old documents and learn about the class you have to take in order to keep your license. I am excited about being able to work in the office and see how a business is ran. I am worried about not being able to do all my blogs on time and getting the credit I need in order to pass this class.
Mentor Interview and "Internship journal" post - Due Friday, May 18
I choose to work here because it’s close to home and since I’ve worked here I have built a friendly bond with all my coworkers and the office is close to home. And I love going to Oceanside. A typical work day is basically answering the phone and checking one the insurance document of peoples, companies, houses, motorcycles stuff like that. So you could work from home like most of the coworkers but you can also come into the office. You are on the phone talking and on the computer filling out documents. It’s very important to be able to communicate to people and be able to have a conversation with someone. Kind of like a car sells man when they try and get to know you and share stories with you. Stuff like that. You need to be able to do two things at once I’ve seen at the office. You can sometimes use a little notebook to right side notes that you take when you are on the phone with a client. Being friendly, good conversation, great customer service. I don't have any questions for my internship because if I question anything I’m going to overthink. I am taking the train from Palomar then riding it all the way down to Oceanside everyday. I get there by 8:30 then by 9:00 I’m at the office then I leave at 3:30. Taking the train can be a bit much but it gets me to where I need to go.
May 22, 2018 Due May 23 My internship project is kind of hard to explain. What my project is based on is I will go through all the data of December, January and February and count up all of the canceled auto, home , and the new business home and auto then I will put all the data together in a power point showing the percent of home insurance is bought in a year and same with the auto. Then compare it to the canceled and see what the office can do to decrease the number of canceled home and auto insurance. Ms. Paula told me it easier to get auto then home. Then tomorrow we are going to start my project.
May 23, 2018 Due May 24: During my internship I have not had any problems with self advocacy. In my work place we usually stick to yourself and if I need help understanding a task that was given to me I would ask Ms. Paula my mentor or Ms. Elizabeth. Ms. Elizabeth is this amazing Hispanic lady I met today that helped my organizing some documents in the office. And she bought me her favorite drink from Starbucks this morning. She got me a caramel Frappuccino. It was amazing. Ms. Paula got 2 cups of Chai tea. It's her favorite. Then I got to watch my baby nephew his name is Legend. He is 4 weeks old. It was kind of hard trying to hold him and do my work at the same time but I learned very fast how to do it. The best part was is Legend didn't cry and he slept all day. Then on Thursday I had a little trouble understanding how to calculating everything I needed for my presentation I'm making for my POL but after a bit of work figuring it out on my own I got used to it. Today we had some creepy guy come into the office and he started asking about his ex wife and if she's been into the office and if she got a new car. It was creepy and then he called the office asking more questions.
DRAMA POST May 24 2018 After I was all done with my internship I was walking to the train stop and since it was Thursday and Oceanside always has the Sunset market there was a lot of people out. But I was walking past the regal and two guys were running the one in front was being chased by the one in the back. The one in front was homeless and the one in the back was in the military from what I was told. He was chasing after this guy because he stole someone's bag and the military guy went to go get it back and he tackled him to the ground and body slammed him. The homeless guy had blood on the floor in front of this bar. There was around 50 people watching this whole thing happen it was crazy. Seeing this guy hit the floor was painful to see. because you know that hurt so much. His head and neck was the first thing to hit the floor then the rest of his body.
May 30th 2018: Your work as an intern: During my internship I have learned about how much time is spent making phone calls, getting phone calls, customer service and math. Even if Ms. Paula was having a bad day and she would get a phone call from a client she would put her bad day aside and put a smile on her face and talk to the client in a positive way. My work as an intern is meaningful to my education because it helped me practice math during the time I was out of school. It took me a couple tries to understand the math but I finally understand enough to explain it to my peers.
